Week 1
Theme: Understanding Emerging Adulthood
The theme of Week 1 centers on building a foundational understanding of the developmental stage of emerging adulthood—a unique life phase between adolescence and full adulthood, typically spanning ages 19 to 24. This stage is marked by exploration in areas such as identity, relationships, education, career paths, and beliefs. Young adults are often seeking independence, yet still rely on emotional or financial support from their parents.
By exploring this theme, parents learn to:
-
Recognize that their children are not “grown-ups” yet, but not teenagers anymore.
-
Understand the common challenges young adults face—uncertainty, experimentation, instability.
-
Shift their parenting role from controlling or instructing to supporting and mentoring.
-
Begin letting go of expectations rooted in older models of adulthood (e.g., moving out at 18, having a stable job by 22).
This theme is crucial because it lays the emotional and cognitive groundwork for the rest of the program. It invites parents to view their young adults with fresh eyes, building empathy and curiosity rather than frustration or disappointment.
