Leap 1
Understanding Child Development
Activity Name: My Feelings Thermometer
Description:
Children use a simple “Feelings Thermometer” chart with four levels—Happy, Okay, Sad, Angry—and point to (or place a clip/magnet on) the level that matches how they feel at that moment. The teacher/parent briefly talks with the child about why they chose that feeling and what they may need (e.g., a break, water, reassurance, space, or celebration).
Objective:
-
To help children identify and label their emotions accurately.
-
To develop emotional self-awareness and understand that all feelings are normal.
-
To encourage children to communicate their emotions in a safe and structured way.
-
To support early self-regulation skills (recognizing a feeling before it becomes overwhelming).
Frequency: 2–3 times per week (5-minute check-ins)
