Unit 1: Numbers & Place Value
Week 1: Place Value & Numbers (1–1000)
Learning Objectives:
-
Understand and identify place value (hundreds, tens, ones)
-
Read and write 3-digit numbers
-
Compare and form numbers using digits
-
Understand expanded form (e.g. 325 = 300 + 20 + 5)
Day-Wise Plan Using Activity Types
Day 1 – Hands-On Activity: Build & Break Numbers
Materials Needed:
-
Ice cream sticks / straws / Lego blocks
-
Paper cups or bowls labelled “Hundreds”, “Tens”, “Ones”
-
Number cards (3-digit)
Activity Steps:
-
Take 100 sticks and divide them into bundles of 10 (for tens) and single sticks (ones).
-
Ask your child to build a number (e.g., 263):
-
2 cups with 100 sticks (Hundreds)
-
6 bundles of 10 sticks (Tens)
-
3 single sticks (Ones)
-
-
Ask: “How many total?” → Encourage them to say: “200 + 60 + 3 = 263”.
-
Break the number by removing tens/ones and ask what number is left.
Learning Outcome: Understand how each digit has a value depending on its place.
Day 2 – Story-Based Activity: “The Kingdom of Numbers”
Story Premise:
Tell a fun story where the Hundreds King, Tens Prince, and Ones Baby rule the Number Kingdom.
Story Sample:
“Long ago, in the Land of Digitaria, King Hundred ruled with power, Prince Ten helped manage, and Baby One caused trouble by changing numbers. One day, they had to form a team to make number 546 to protect the land. King brought 500 soldiers, Prince Ten brought 40 guards, and Baby One brought 6 snacks…”
Discussion:
-
Pause and ask your child to draw what each character brought.
-
At the end, ask them to form other numbers for the kingdom (you say the number, they break it down).
Learning Outcome: Deepens understanding of place value in a narrative format.
Day 3 – Creative Activity: Place Value Monster Art
Materials Needed:
-
Colored paper strips (hundreds = long, tens = medium, ones = short)
-
Glue, scissors, markers
-
Blank sheet
Steps:
-
Child selects a 3-digit number (e.g. 781).
-
Use paper strips to represent each digit:
-
7 long strips (hundreds)
-
8 medium strips (tens)
-
1 short strip (ones)
-
-
Arrange them as monster arms, legs, and spikes.
-
Write the number and its expanded form on the monster.
Optional: Make a “Monster Museum” wall over the week.
Learning Outcome: Visual and creative reinforcement of number construction.
Day 4 – Outdoor Exploration: Number Hunt Walk
Activity:
Go on a “Number Hunt” in your building, street, or park.
Instructions:
-
Look for 3-digit numbers on license plates, house numbers, or electric meters.
-
For each number found:
-
Say the place value of each digit
-
Write it down in a notebook
-
Compare which is bigger/smaller
-
Extra: Carry a small notebook and track how many numbers were even/odd.
Learning Outcome: Applying place value understanding in the real world.
Day 5 – Review Game: “Guess My Number” Game
How to Play:
-
One person thinks of a number (e.g. 472)
-
The other asks clues:
-
“Is the hundreds digit more than 5?”
-
“Is the tens digit even?”
-
“Is the number between 400 and 500?”
-
-
Give 5 clues max. Guess the number!
Variation: Use flashcards and have child build the number based on clues.
Learning Outcome: Reinforces understanding of digit placement and logical deduction.
